وهذا ما دفع الباحثون إلى التعليق على هذه التجربة في مقال نشرته مجلة «السلوك الاقتصادي والمؤسسة» بعبارة «الأعمال ذات معنى وقيمة هي الأرخص»، مستدركةً أن تجاهل أبعاد معنى العمل وقيمته قد يكلف رب العمل والمجتمع غالياً. الصندوق والشوكولاته قياساً على نموذج سيزيف، قام فريق من باحثي علم السلوكيات بقيادة كريستوفر هسي من جامعة شيكاغو مؤخراً بدراسة ما إذا كان الناس يستمتعون فعلياً بكونهم منشغلين بالقيام بعمل ما أم أنهم يفضلون عدم القيام بأي عمل على الإطلاق. وعند إتمام الأشخاص المختارين الإجابة عن الأسئلة التي تضمنها الاستبيان، طُلٍب منهم اختيار ما إذا كانوا يفضلون وضع الاستبيان في صندوق قريب أو صندوق يبعد عن مكان وجودهم مسافة 15 دقيقة مشياً على الأقدام، وقيل لآخرين إنهم سيحصلون على نفس المكافأة- قطعة شوكولاته - بصرف النظر عن الصندوق الذي يختارون وضع ورقة الاستبيان فيه، بينما أُخبٍر آخرون أن مكافأة وضع الاستبيان في الصندوق البعيد هو عبارة عن شوكولاته ذات نوعية مختلفة عن تلك الموجودة قرب الصندوق القريب، ثم قاس الباحثون معدلات سعادة كل شخص منهم بعد انتهاء التجربة، فكانت النتائج مثيرة، إذ تبين أنه على الرغم من أن غالبية الأشخاص كانوا بحاجة إلى محفز لاختيار الذهاب إلى الصندوق الأبعد- للحصول على نوعية شوكولاته أفضل- فإن جميعهم كانوا سعيدين للقيام بذلك.

واستمر الحال نفسه حتى عندما طُلب منهم المشي لمسافة أطول في تجربة تالية في إطار متابعة حالتهم النفسية. راحة الفراغ زائفة تُبين هذه النتائج كيف أن الإنسان وعلى الرغم من ميله إلى الراحة والفراغ، فإنه يفضل في أعماق دواخله أن يظل مشغولاً بفعل شيء ما، ببساطة لأن في الانشغال والعمل سعادته. وحتى في حالة العامل السيزيفي الذي يتحسر ويشعر بالأسى على خلو عمله من أية قيمة- وفق استنتاج الباحثين- فإنه كان سيكون أكثر تعاسةً لو أنه لم يكن يعمل بالمرة. ويقول هسي «الأشخاص المشغولون دائماً يستمتعون بسعادة أكثر حتى عندما يُجبَرون على الانشغال بالقيام بشيء ما». ويضيف: «نعتقد أن الناس قد يكونون سعيدين حتى عندما يُطلبُ منهم بناء جسور في السراب ليس لها أي منفعة، على أن يظلوا معطلين، خاصةً إذا أُعطي لهم مبرر يفسر لهم سبب قيامهم ببناء هذه الجسور». وطبعاً هذا الأمر يصح فقط إن اكتمل بناء الجسور، فإعطاء معنى لجدوى القيام بعمل ما أو تذوق لذة إنجاز مهمة ما قد يكون مشروطاً بإتمام هذا العمل أو هذه المهمة، حسب قول مايكل نورتورن الذي يدرس علم نفس المستهلكين في جامعة هارفارد.

مفعول آيكيا بعد عمله ضمن فريق أرييلي ودانييل موكون الذي يجري دراسات مقارٍنة حول السلوك الاستهلاكي في جامعة كاليفورنيا، سلط نورتورن الضوء على ما يصطلح عليه «مفعول آيكيا» الذي يقوم على مطالبة الزبائن بتركيب أثاثهم بأنفسهم. ووجد الباحثون من جهة ثانية أنه حينما يراهن الناس في مزاد علني على منتجاتهم وممتلكاتهم الخاصة، فإنهم يبالغون في تقييم السعر المستحق لها. لكن ومع أن «مفعول آيكيا» يبين أن الناس يستمتعون أكثر بإنجاز عمل تركيبهم لأثاثهم الخاص ويرون في نجاح ذلك التركيب نجاحاً لهم، فإن هذا الإحساس يختفي وينعدم وجوده في حالة الفشل في مهمة التركيب. ويقول نورتورن «إذا بذلت كل جهدك في القيام بعمل ما ولم يؤد ذلك إلى نتيجة، فإن الشعور بالسرور لديك ينعدم». تقرير المصير لم يتفاجأ عالم النفس إدوارد ديسي من جامعة روكيستر من أن هناك عوامل ذات صلة بالدخل تدفع الناس إلى العمل وتحفزهم عليه أكثر.

فقد توصل ديسي وزميله ريتشارد راين بعد قضاء سنوات في البحث حول الحافزية والدافعية إلى أن نظرية جديدة هي ما اصطلحا عليه «نظرية تقرير المصير» تفيد أن بيئة العمل الناجحة تعزز الإحساس بالاستقلالية والكفاءة والشراكة. أما الوجه الآخر للعملة- يقول ديسي- فهو أن بيئات العمل التي تفشل في تلبية هذه الحاجات والمتطلبات يكون لها أثر سيء وسلبي على الرضا النفسي للفرد وتحقيقه لذاته. ويضيف ديسي قائلاً «نريد أن نحس أن ما نقوم به وننجزه له معنى وقيمة في هذا العالم». يقول ديسي إن الاهتمام بمعنى العمل وقيمته هو أمر قديم وُجٍد منذ الأيام التي كان فيها جهد الإنسان يحدد بشكل مباشر مدى قدرته على البقاء. وقد جعل نمط الحياة المعاصر المتميز بوفرة الإنتاج مسألةَ تأمين الأكل والسكن أسهل من ذي قبل وأقل إجهاداً، وهو ما جعل الناس يحولون طاقتهم إلى مناح أخرى في الحياة. غير أن مسعى ربط الجهد بالغاية لا يزال ذلك المسعى القديم الجديد. عمل له معنى يقول عالم النفس ديفيد بلوشتاين من جامعة بوستون: «إذا ضمن الناس تأمين ضروراتهم المعيشية وتلبية حاجاتهم من أجل البقاء، فإنهم سيفضلون إيجاد عمل له معنى». غير أنه ونظراً لظروف أزمة العمل الراهنة والأوقات الصعبة التي نعيشها، فإن عدداً لا بأس به من العاطلين عن العمل لا يخفون استعدادهم لقبول أي عمل يضمن لهم تأمين دفع الفواتير الشهرية وتأمينهم الصحي».
